Welcome To MICHAEL'S

After almost 30 years, the “enduring elder statesman” of Californian cuisine (and older sibling of the Manhattan counterpart) “hasn’t lost its edge”, delivering “divine” dishes in a “romantic setting” under the watchful eye of owner Michael McCarty whose “attention to detail and pursuit of the freshest ingredients remains the gold standard”; acolytes agree you should “always eat” on “enchanting garden” “patio, as this bit of Eden” provides an “oasis of calm, beauty and fine dining” in the “frenetic craziness that is Santa Monica.

The wine list has been growing and changing ever since sommelier Andrew Turner took the reins September 2001. Selections include hand picked Pinot Noirs, which represent his enthusiasm for the grape after a stint at “Pinot Camp” in Oregon. Andrew has added a variety of Italian wines – reflecting his passion for the language – to the current wine list, which represents 14 different countries. Michael’s Wine List has again been awarded by the Wine Spectator, BEST OF AWARD OF EXCELLENCE 2002. Cheers!!!

Artworks and Rotating Exhibitions

Man in a Red SuitFrom the moment we opened in Santa Monica in 1979, fine art has always complemented the fine dining experience at Michael’s. Works by Robert Graham, Jim Dine, Chas Garabedian, Sam Francis, Richard Diebenkorn, Jasper Johns, David Hockney, and other contemporary masters contribute to a setting that some guests have compared to a world-class gallery.

Artist Kim McCarty’s “Man in a Red Suit” is a hallmark of the Michael’s menu cover, and several of her paintings hang in the restaurant’s collection. Kim also curates rotating exhibitions in the three private dining rooms on the second floor, which present works by some of today’s most acclaimed and innovative artists. Guests are always welcome to visit during restaurant hours.
